Rehabitat was born out a great sense of urgency. Earth is in crisis. The effects of the climate emergency and ensuing social inequality dominate global headlines daily.
But Rehabitat was also born out of optimism. A belief that we can overcome these crises if our environments are designed in symbiosis with humans and nature. We are a proudly South African collective, committed to cultivating an ecosystem of thriving communities and landscapes.

We’re here to help you grow them.

Our mission is to re-imagine obsolete paradigms, processes and assets so they can be better deployed to achieve human development and biodiversity conservation objectives.

This is what we do:

Development Facilitation & Funding
We assist communities, agencies and funders to develop sustainable rural economies, by mapping community assets to maximise potential.
Rural Economic Development
We identify opportunities in the rural economy and develop bespoke economic and environmental strategies that unlock the potential of people, place and purpose.
Biodiversity, Asset Management and Regeneration
Based on the principles of partnership, empowerment and sustainability, Rehabitat cultivates obsolete & degraded rural and eco-tourism assets in a mutually beneficial and profitable way.

Richard Stretton

Design & Architecture

After graduating from architecture school in 1993, Richard spent 18 months living with the rural community at Manzengwenya developing two tourism camps. The projects were developed using available material, local skill and knowledge; a thread that has continued to run through all subsequent projects with his award-winning architecture studio, Koop Design. From houses, commercial buildings, institutions and lodges, to rural economic interventions, Richard’s focus is on integrated, community-centric development projects. Developing projects with their entire ecosystem in mind, he delivers everything from design to economic resilience solutions that interweave environmental sustainability, social development and food security into symbiotic public environments.
